Our History

The Maywood Tennis Club was founded in 1973 by local businessmen, Al Subin, Moe Stein and Dick May. Since the early 70s numerous tennis and celebrity athletes have participated in activities organized by the club, and many instructional and social programs were developed.

Under the current leadership of Larry May, Mike Goldstein, Bill Kurtzer and Marv Benzing, Maywood Tennis Club continues to raise the standards of tennis service clubs. In prioritizing maintenance of the Club’s premium indoor courts, this centrally-located club has become an active part of the North Jersey community.

Meet Our Staff

  • Marv is a former nationally ranked player and has earned a 'Master Professional' rating, the highest possible certification in the 'United States Professional Tennis Association' (USPTA). Marv served on the 'USTA National Tennis Center Committee' and more recently, has expanded his teaching accreditation to the 'United States Professional Tennis Registry' (USPTR).

    In January 2000, Marv Benzing was honored by the USPTA Eastern Division as "1999 Volunteer of the Year". In 1998, Tennis Industry Magazine voted Marv a "Great American Hero". In 1997, the Cerebral Palsy Center of Bergen County, honored Marv with a "Community Service Award" for his many years of service at the C.P. Center's Annual Gala.

  • Kai has a rich and diverse coaching experience, having worked in multiple countries, starting in the United Kingdom. Initially, he started as a Junior Developer and found his calling in developing young and talented players. He then spent 6 years in Asia, where he taught in Hong Kong and the Philippines, honing his skills and working with national-level players. He was also the driving force behind a comprehensive junior program.

    Currently, he trains high-performance players and serves as the director of tennis. Kai holds certifications from the USPTR, USPTA, and British Lawn Tennis Association, solidifying his standing as a professional tennis coach.

  • Roy has taught and trained nationally ranked Juniors playing national tournaments as well as many adults playing in the Bergen County Women's League and the USTA Summer League.  Roy was a long-time resident of Maywood, and graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

  • JJ Gramatica is a USPTA Certified coach with over 10 years of experience. He is the son of Nestor Gramatica Sr, who was a former number one professional tennis player in Thailand.  JJ was a top singles & doubles player at Saint Peter's University (2006-2010): NCAA Division 1 Tennis, and top ranked player in the USTA Eastern division. He hopes to use his playing experience to help guide future tennis players through the correct pathway. JJ vision is to bring joy, energy and excitement to all his players, that they can take with them the tools of tennis for the rest of their life.

    He is also the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) organizer at Maywood Tennis Club.

  • Erik Wuehler is an Alumni of the graduate professional tennis management program at Ferris State. His accomplishments include Bergen County Hard courts Champion of 1994 and 1995 and Bergen County Indoor Champion of 1996 and 1998.  He is USPTA and USPTR affiliated.

  • Steve Frankel has been a Tri-state area tennis instructor for the past 25 years.  After graduating from Monmouth University as a three-time conference winner, Steve continued his tennis career competing in local and international tournaments.

  • Hisham Abaza is an Elite USPTA Certified professional, including Cardio Tennis and 10 & Under Tennis.  Hisham is also currently serving as the Women Tennis Head Coach at William Paterson University in Wayne NJ. A member of Maywood Tennis Club since 2018, with over 20 years of tennis teaching experience, and an extensive sports background including expertise in tennis, soccer, volleyball, and fitness training. He teaches all age groups and skill levels. Hisham has led players to numerous ITF pro wins and titles plus guiding many junior tennis players’ journeys

    A traveling tennis coach with professional players & top American junior competitors.  Served as Director & Head Pro of the Deerfield Beach, Florida Tennis Complex.  Mentored by Master Professional Rick Macci for over 15 years.

  • David is a USPTA certified professional with many years of coaching experience. He joined Maywood Tennis Club in 2014 after playing tennis competitively in college.

    David has been actively involved in sports all his life, but his biggest passion is coaching tennis. His lesson plan is developed with each individual’s unique skill set goals. He works with a wide range of players from beginners to advanced players, as well as high performance junior tennis players.

    Coach David is available early morning and late night to accommodate working adults and students with busy school schedules.

  • Gus has been a tri-state area tennis teaching professional for the past 33 years.  He has taught and trained sectional, regional and national ranked juniors in Ecuador, his native country, and in the United States of America.  He is a certified professional by the United States Professional Tennis Registry since 1989.  He is a level 2 certified tennis professional, including general tennis, adult development, Ten and Under Tennis, Tennis 11-17, high performance.  Certifications in (USTA) Coach Youth tennis, Level 1 sport science, and Argentina Tennis Teachers School (E.A.P.T.).

  • Louis grew up in the Bronx, NY, 5 minutes away from 20 tennis courts.  He began playing competitive tennis at the age of 10 years old all the way through to college tennis at Hunter’s College (Manhattan, NY).  With 10 plus years of coaching experience, 5 of those years at John McEnroe Tennis Academy on Randall’s Island, Louis brings a new vision and outlook to Maywood Tennis Club.

  • For more than twenty five years Harout has shared his knowledge and experience and passion for tennis with students of all ages and levels of experience with a teaching philosophy centered on the fundamentals of proper technique.

    Harout meets each student where they are at to develop and reinforce the skills that form the basis of the sport.

    Committed to the success of each student,Harout is as patient as he is demanding taking the time to demonstrate proper form and technique while holding each student accountable to achieving their personal goals,whether these relate to fitness competition or fun, His friendly demeanor allows for a genuine connection with each student,while his boundless energy inspires everyone around him to reach for their best.

  • Eddie is a well-known figure in the tennis community and has been coaching at the club for over two decades. He has a talent for working with players of all skill levels and ages, from juniors just starting out to seasoned adult players looking to improve their game. With a wealth of experience and a passion for the sport, Eddie is dedicated to helping his students reach their full potential on the court.
